Why NTK

Our Management

  • Words from Our Founder
Mr. T.K. Ng Founder, Managing Director, Educational Consultant, Chemistry Teacher

NTK was and is truly a labor of love. Starting out with three teachers including myself, NTK grew little by little — from one tiny office to half a floor, then a full floor-and-a-half, then two floors, and today, four floors with a team of over 80 well-qualified teachers. Over the years, the development of NTK has never been forced. We grew slowly and steadily, taking each step only when we could ensure our teaching quality.

The concept of NTK was initially conceived in the mind of a young boy from Penang, Malaysia many years ago. Running through the colonial side streets, I grew up in a time without mobile phones or the internet. My upbringing was essentially a combination of East and West. After all, Malaysia’s education system adopts a mix of British and Chinese elements. I devoted long hours to my studies to earn a spot in the prestigious Chung Ling High School. Although I was given a scholarship for medical school, to ensure that I could contribute to my family’s income before long, I graduated instead with a degree in Bio-Chemistry from the National University of Malaysia.

After university, I set out by myself to Japan to work as well as further my studies and broaden myself culturally. Through a twist of fate, I made the decision to come to Hong Kong where I taught Science and Math at several international schools. A person can earn his or her money in various ways, and wealth can be passed down from generation to generation, but knowledge and erudition is up to oneself — a lesson I learned as a child and one that I was determined to pass on to a younger generation. The several years of classroom experience was invaluable, but I also knew that I had more to give than the “inside-the-box” teaching that is often endemic in a traditional school setting.

The desire for me to establish a private educational company grew stronger each day, and so in 1996, NTK Learning Center was established. A decade later, NTK Publishing was established and we have since published over 30 study guides and counting that can be purchased at major bookstores in Hong Kong and internationally.

A reflection of my own beliefs, NTK has grown to what it is today based precisely on how I’ve approached education: there are no shortcuts and the right mix of proper attitude, guidance, and hard work is the formula for success. In architecture, laying the foundation is the most important step. In education it is the same – a student must build a strong foundation in their core academic subjects before they can have the freedom and knowledge to explore more diverse disciplines later in high school or beyond.

I was taught at a young age that to succeed in life, you need to work hard and double your efforts to make something of yourself. Although I have not had the privilege of going to an Ivy League school, I am even more proud of the number of students I’ve helped get into Ivy League schools. I have gained so much insight from exposure to different education systems, from studying under a Chinese-British curriculum in my home country to teaching the US curriculum in Hong Kong. My immersion in the many different international curricula is the valuable experience that I brought with me to NTK.

To this day, I am exceedingly proud that our growth has predominantly been through word-of-mouth; you will not see us packaging our teachers like pop stars.. We are a humble yet devoted team. As an educator, what I’m also proud of is not only seeing the countless students I’ve taught graduate from various elite universities, but to see them now as leaders of industry in Hong Kong and worldwide, and contributing meaningfully to society. The time and effort put into building a solid foundation early on in one’s life will surely produce results — as it has for me and the many students of NTK.

As we approach our 20-year anniversary, I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to my colleagues. With their support and dedication, NTK has flourished and evolved into something greater than I had initially planned. 2015 will also mark the year in which we open our second campus in Kowloon, and we look forward to continuing our philosophy of careful and planned growth in our services and scope in order to keep the best interests of our students at the forefront.

I am truly thankful to those who have helped me realize my vision for education; especially my parents, who instilled in me a firm belief in family values, discipline, and organization that I carry with me to this day. I look forward to reaching many more milestones with each and every one of you.

What is the role of tutoring?

Tutoring is a form of coaching and instruction that helps students achieve set goals and expand their intellectual capability. The benefits of tutoring are impossible to ignore. For one, there are many standardized exams which a student simply cannot get support for from school. These high-stakes exams such as the SAT and ACT may very well determine a student's academic future, so tutoring becomes a great asset. Tutoring also plays an important function in coaching and mentoring a student. The ability of a teacher to inspire and bring to life different subjects is more valuable than the subject itself. The value of this is evident in how "tutors" are equally important in professional and adult life; we hire personal life coaches, professional consultants, personal trainers, and many others to help us achieve more. Lastly, tutors allow students to really explore academic topics in much greater depth than they can in the school classroom. We frequently have students who study topics with us simply because they are interested in it or cannot take them at school.

How do you select your teachers? Can you talk about their qualifications?

Our teachers are carefully screened and tested before we make the decision to hire them. In addition to going through an interview process and mock lessons, applicants also sit for our proprietary tests in the respective subject areas. Our teachers are, of course, academically qualified. However, we do not screen them purely for their academic qualification. It may be common practice for many tutorial schools to highlight that they have many Ivy League or elite university graduates as teachers, or even use this as an advertising tactic. We feel this is not the right approach. While we also have many teachers who graduate from top universities, our experience has definitely shown that what makes a great teacher is his or her ability to connect with students and ability to actually teach and coach. Although there is often a correlation, ultimately the performance of a teacher is measured in how well the student does, and not how well the teacher performed at school.

How do you view the role of the tutors at NTK?

At NTK, our tutors are not simply teachers, but mentors for their students. I think we're unique in the sense that our school has been built upon the word of mouth referrals from parents over the years. Our 20th anniversary is just around the corner, and we've come a long way. We started as a very small outfit with only three teachers. With no marketing or advertising, we've grown to over 80 full-time teachers across several major academic subject groups. We still do not engage in heavy advertising, and you won't find us splashed across buses or mini-buses, yet we've continued to earn the trust of parents. Many of our teachers have seen their students grow from children, to young adults, all the way to successful professionals. It certainly makes me feel old, but several of my students are now well-established lawyers, engineers, business people, and writers. So overall our teachers do much more than just help our students academically; they guide and become mentors to our students in order to help them get the most out of their education.

From your experience, what are the challenges students face nowadays?

One of the main challenges that Hong Kong students face include fierce competition due to the sheer number of students who are applying for spaces at secondary schools and universities. Looking at numbers alone, there is an exponential growth in students competing for roughly the same number of spaces. This has also contributed to a very rigid and competitive style of learning in Hong Kong, which often sadly takes away from the joy and curiosity that should be inherent in learning.

    How can NTK help students?

At NTK, many of our teachers have been teaching at the school for over a decade. We have a wealth of experience across the faculty and senior management that allow us to support our students comprehensively. Our founder, principals, department heads still teach as we have for decades. We offer a one-stop solution for all the main academic subjects and international curriculum and exams. From test preparation, academic guidance, educational planning, educational publishing to admissions consulting, NTK offers comprehensive academic solutions that matches the needs of students today.

    What do the students say?

I just found out that I was accepted off Columbia's wait-list into their School of Engineering! I would like to thank you for all your help and advice during my application process — thank you SO MUCH for the SAT classes, the feedback on my essay and the encouragement and support! You have made my university application journey a lot smoother!

    -- S.L. (University Admissions)

I want to say thank you for all your help with my personal statements and supplements. I think they're one of the main things that led to my acceptance. Thank you for giving me support, for reading my supplements, for giving me extra time for multiple lessons, and much more. It was great taking lessons with you. They're part of the few that I don't actually dread. On another note, I know you're busy with work and all but I hope you don't stop teaching. It is not only your superb skills in English that make you a great teacher, but also the fact that you're an awesome person who is very approachable, sincere and cool. That's something I think students rarely find in teachers.

    -- E.C. (University Admissions)

Einstein once said, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge”, and he couldn’t have been more right. I was a student of James when I was studying the IB Diploma, and every lesson with him was edifying. It was James’s guidance that allowed me to find the right balance of discipline and creativity in my writing style. Not only has he guided me to overcome most of my challenging written tasks such as the IB English papers, Theory of Knowledge, and university applications, but he also instilled in me an appreciation and awareness of how important it is to have a solid foundation in the English language, and the joy of being able to excel in it.

    -- J.T. (IBDP English)

I remember spending an unhealthy amount of time in your classroom over sophomore summer. I usually like private classes because the student and teacher establish a closer rapport thanks largely to funny mnemonics and awkward moment stories. The SAT course I took with you was a group class, but I felt the same sincerity in how you taught everything from strategies to gibberish-like vocabulary, how you listened to our worries, how you laughed along with our antics — and how you brought a class of five rambunctious strangers together. I would boast to any and all worried parents that your class was an encouraging introduction to the evil College Board world.

    -- S.N. (SAT Reasoning Test)

In James' classes, I learned and practiced the skills required for IBDP English. He emphasizes the idea that 'practice makes perfect' and uses his experience with the IBDP to guide me through the exam and paper writing process. Because he’s so familiar with the IB, I never hesitate to ask him questions regarding the program.

His classes are entertaining and very interactive. After every class, I walk away with a large load of information to reflect on. He is by far my favorite teacher!

    -- M.Y. (IBDP English)

Classes with James are never boring. James actually makes me enjoy breaking down a poem; he makes it feel more like a game than actual work. James is not only an awesome IBDP English teacher, but he is also an excellent mentor in other subjects and fields, such as Theory of Knowledge and university applications. He gives perceptive comments on how to improve essays and he is also very good at picking out subtle grammar mistakes.

James is an entertaining, witty, and insightful teacher. Thank goodness I had him for my two years of IB or else I would have failed!

It has been more than fifteen years since I first entered the education profession. I still remember those early days when I started my career as a teaching assistant in university while working towards my first master’s degree in Mathematics. Now as a classroom teacher and educational consultant, to me, nothing is more gratifying than seeing students reach their full potential.

Students at NTK come from a variety of ages, nationalities and learning backgrounds. To help them excel academically, we offer a wide spectrum of courses covering the IBDP, IGCSE, GCE AL, SAT and AP. Many of our faculty members, including myself, are official examiners of various exam boards.

One aspect of my role at NTK that I enjoy most is meeting with students to discuss their academic goals and from there, work out a study plan that would be most beneficial to them. To be a successful consultant, one must be an intent listener. After all, it is fundamental to learn about each student’s personality, likes and dislikes, fears and concerns, strengths and weaknesses, and above all, aspirations.

Our professional consultants can offer guidance in general university application, selection of subjects and extra-curricular activities that could enhance a student’s portfolio and the chance of success at admission. We also take the time to meet with parents in order to find out their expectations, allowing us to offer sound and realistic recommendations.

The door to my office is always open for students who wish to drop by to share their thoughts and ideas with me, while I in turn will share mathematical theories and applications with them, enlightening them about algebraic concepts, calculus techniques, and multi-dimensional geometry. I value the relationship that I’ve built with students throughout the ten years I’ve spent at NTK, and it always brings a smile to my face when students come to me for advice on non-academic achievements too.

I am grateful for the time that I spent studying at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, which allowed me to broaden my views in a multicultural background. I often tell my students that getting into a good school or university can open a world of opportunity. Quadratic equations form the basis of mathematics; just as knowledge is the key to education.

While the road to learning is never-ending, I feel glad to have been a part of my students’ lives, knowing that we have directed them in the right path. This is also a feeling shared by my colleagues. I hope that through our lessons and consultations, we have enriched and inspired the lives of each youngster from NTK, and can bring a positive impact to his or her future.

    What do the students say?

Alex has been teaching me for several years now and through our lessons, I can tell that Alex is someone who genuinely enjoys teaching and wants the best for his students. He adapts his teaching style and methods to suit the needs and learning habit of each individual. I think he is a very versatile and observant teacher. Without Alex, I would have a lot more troubles with math. Lessons with him are never boring — he makes learning math so much more interesting!
